Paying for storage

September 23rd, 2008 at 07:52 pm

Ok, a bit of a back story.

My parents asked me to come back home so I could pay off some major debt and go back to school. I figured I would be here for about a year ...

Well, last night, they dropped the bomb on me that they want us to stay the following year as well. They are going on a year long RV trip and were planning on moving to North Florida ... but with the housing market as it is, there is pretty much no way they will be able to sell their house.

So, I'm looking at two years living here. I have a whole household worth of stuff. Isn't it insane to pay for storage for two years on it?!

I'm thinking of either selling things like the dishes and sort on Craigslist, or just donating them to Goodwill. My furniture has a home at a friends house, so I don't have to worry about that. I'll have to buy new things when they come home, but at $120/month over the course of at least 24 months, we're talking $2880. I know I won't be able to replenish everything with that amount of money, but I needed new livingroom furniture anyways, and I could do probably get most of my household stuff for less than $2500.

So, am I wrong to just give my stuff away, or should I pay to put it in storage like my dad thinks?

Why don't you have a big garage sale and sell the stuff??

If your parents are not home- I say stuff the house. Fill an extra bedroom to the ceiling. But sell the stuff you dont want.

LOL ... I hadn't even thought about a garage sell.

That's a wonderful plan. Then, if something doesn't sell, I can always store it in our back closet or the shed my parents have on property.

    DUH!

I store it at your parents house if there's room.

yeah, anything you still want i would keep in a spare room or shed, and have a garage sale or sell things. the things that you dont want and dont sell, those are what you should give away.

i'd store it at the house. If you are going to be alone there for a year what is the harm in filling a room or two? Can any of it be in the garage (off the floor on palates to protect against flooding) or other storage area of your house?

It would be cheaper to store it for free at the house then selling it for pennies on the dollar and buying new stuff. maybe downsize some things...

I agree with the others... I'd store it in an extra room or shed. It might be a good chance to go through and purge some older stuff you don't want to keep carrying along with you though.

We don't have any room in the actual house. It's a SMALL house, and we're pretty tight (three bedrooms/five people sort of thing)

    I think I've figured out a plan ... here's hoping!

Store the stuff in an extra room, garage, and what you cannot store, sell on craigslist.
